About Carl Bower
Carl spent 15 years as a photojournalist for Newhouse News Service, the Times-Picayune, Helsingin Sanomat, and The Providence Journal. His photos have appeared in numerous publications, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, TIME, Newsweek and the London Sunday Times Magazine.
His story on one woman's struggle with breast cancer received a Clarion Award and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography.
Chica Barbie, his series on the culture of beauty in Colombia, was featured in The New York Times LENS, Burn magazine, exhibited at the Farmani Gallery in New York as part of the show Select Gender and Exposed: Critical Mass at the Photographic Center Northwest in Seattle and the LOOKbetween Festival of Photography in Charlottesville, Virginia. It received the Blue Earth Alliance Prize for Best Project Photography, was a finalist for the Book Award at the New York Photo Festival, one of six finalists for Photolucida's 2009 Critical Mass Book Award, and a finalist in the 2010 Photography Book Now competition.
